Safe and Supportive Schools Act

  • On April 9, 2014 Governor Dayton signed the Minnesota Safe and Supportive Schools Act into law. The Safe and Supportive Schools Act is a bullying-prevention law. The Act applies to public school students and school-aged children who voluntarily participate in public school activities or co-curricular or extracurricular activities. The Act only applies to student-to-student conduct. Click here to read the full law.
The procedures to prevent and address bullying behaviors in Willmar Public Schools are in support of the Safe and Supportive Schools Act legislation that prohibits bullying in all Minnesota schools. Click here to read Policy 514.
Policy 514 applies solely to student vs. student bullying. Behavior that occurs at school, on buses, or at school events are covered by this policy.  Electronic behavior that occurs on or off school premises but substantially and materially disrupts education and learning in the school can also be disciplined according to this policy.
All staff members in Willmar Public Schools must make a reasonable effort to address bullying when they see it or know about it.  Investigations into reported bullying will commence within 3 days of the receipt of the report.  Parents of the bully and victims will be contacted with information from the investigation.
The problem of bullying can be effectively controlled, but it will take the combined efforts of the administration, staff, parents, and students of the school district.  Proper education, prompt reporting, and effective interventions make Willmar Public Schools a safe and secure place for all students to learn.
