ADULT EDUCATION

  • Willmar Adult Education provides adults in Kandiyohi County with educational opportunities to acquire and improve literacy skills in order to become self-sufficient, proud employees, family members, and citizens. All classes are FREE and open to anyone 17 years or older and not enrolled in another school. To join our program, all students must register and be assessed. We are located in the Jefferson Learning Center.

    Adult Education offers the following classes:

    • English Language Learning (ELL)
      ELL classes are designed for adults who are new to the English language and U.S. culture. Instruction focuses on communication for everyday life, such as the workplace, for all levels of English speakers. Skills include reading, writing, speaking and listening.

    • GED Preparation Courses
      GED prep courses are FREE for community members wanting to take the GED examination. Classes are offered at a variety of times and locations.

    • Citizenship Preparation Course
      We offer classes every week to help anyone preparing for their Citizenship test. We cover the test, 100 questions, N-400 and the interview, including sentence dictation and oral answers. There are two separate classes available. Come in and find out if you qualify. Sign up at Jefferson Learning Center in the ABE computer lab. Zoom classes will be held weekly, and you can join when it's convenient for you.

    • Basic Skills Courses
      Do you want to brush-up on your skills for school or work? Classroom opportunities are available for native and foreign-born community members. Instruction is personalized and based on the goals of each learner. Basic skills courses offer classes in the following areas:

       - Grammar, punctuation, and writing
       - Fractions, percents, and decimals
       - Reading fluency and comprehension
       - Preparation for college or technical school
       - Preparation for the workforce
       - Study for driver's written test in English for Driving class
       - Understand and practice fundamentals in Basic Computer Skills Class
  • Due to Coronavirus (Covid-19), Adult Education most classes are held through Zoom and other Distance Learning choices. In-person classes are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Anyone interested in joining classes must call 320-231-8480 to schedule an appointment. No walk in appointments are being accepted at this time.
