Student Activities

Middle School Musical:
Each year a musical production is offered to 7th and 8th grade students at the Willmar Middle School. The musical at the Middle School begins in December and ends with four performances during the first weekend of March. In December there is an Audition Workshop on how to audition for everyone who is considering auditioning. At this workshop, students will learn more about the musical itself, learn how to have a successful audition, and get information regarding rehearsal expectations and commitments. Auditions take place after school in the Middle School Choir Room during the two weeks prior to the winter break. The cast list is posted on the last day of school before winter break begins, with rehearsals beginning the week school resumes in January. From that point on, cast members will be scheduled for rehearsals after school and on Saturday mornings based on production needs.  Rehearsals are at the Middle School during January and move to the Senior High during February and March. The musical is open to any 7th and 8th grade student that wishes to participate. Each year about 100 students take part in the production of it, whether on stage or backstage.

Middle School Knowledge Bowl is an interdisciplinary academic program for students in grades 6-7-8. Teams of 4-6 students work cooperatively to answer oral questions from a mix of disciplines including history, government, current events, economics, math, geography, literature, communications, science, health, psychology, art, and music. During knowledge bowl meets, teams of students compete with teams from other schools to answer questions correctly. The Middle School Knowledge Bowl season usually runs from early November to late February. Participants generally meet twice a week for practice. Practices usually last about an hour. Any student can participate in Knowledge Bowl. Math Counts:

The mathematics teachers incorporate the warm-ups and workouts provided by this organization throughout the year. In mid-February a team of four students, four students participating as individuals, and up to six alternates participate in the Southwest Chapter Competition in Marshall. A state competition follows in early March with the culminating national competition held in Washington, DC, in May. Student Council:
The student council is a service organization that represents the Willmar Middle School. We are responsible for organizing dances and other activities for the students as well as helping out around the school and the community. We are looking for responsible students willing to work hard as they lead their team and their school. We need students who can come up with ideas that will serve others and students who have the energy to carry out these ideas.

Two students represent each team; the students of that team vote their representatives into the council. To join the student council a student must petition to the council to be in the election and then win the election. The student council is an excellent opportunity to meet new people, help out around your school, and have a lot of fun!
