The Willmar Senior High School was built in 1994 and is located in northeast Willmar. The Senior High is a public school, serving over 1300 students from 9th through 12th grades.

Nearly 80 full-time teachers provide instruction at the senior high, with more than 50% having attained their Master's degrees. The Willmar Senior High School has a long tradition of educating its youth, including more than 150 different classes. 

The Senior High prides itself on its high graduation rate of 92.64%, and low dropout index of 1.67.

The Senior High School's student achievement goals emphasis is that all students will improve their note taking skills across the curriculum, and that all students will improve their test taking skills in all curricular areas.

Reaching Out

Parents may actively stay informed of their child's education through a Parent Portal on the internet. By accessing their child's class schedules, parents can view assignments, grades, behavioral issues and even his/her cafeteria account. If a parent has any particular question or concern, they may also communicate with teachers via e-mail.

Achievement

The Willmar Senior High School Operates on a block schedule. During the nine-week quarter system, students take four, 85-minute class periods per day. This enables students to earn 16 credits per year.

The Senior High School operates under a standard four-point grading scale, and advanced palcement courses are weighted .5 for grades above a D+. Students must meet Willmar Senior High School and Minnesota Graduation Rule requirements in order to earn a high school diploma. A minimum of 58 credits are required to graduate. Students must also achieve at least a 75% (600) score on the Basic Standards Math and Reading tests, and score at least a "3" on the Writing test.

The Senior High has over 700 computers throughout the building, with wireless labs in math, communications, science, health and social studies classrooms. Thre are also five hard-wire computer labs. Advanced technology opportunities also include an in-house TV studio, video production class, industrial technology, music composition hardware and software, scientific intrumentation and GPS instruction.

Challenge & Growth

For students who enjoy a rigorous academic challenge, the Willmar Senior High offers a wide variety of Advanced Placement classes. The curriculum also offers honors, accelerated and college preparation classes, as well as online learning opportunities for students. Students may also participate in academic competitions including Mock Trial, Knowledge Bowl, Math League, Speech and One Act Plays.

For students who may need academic assistance, the Senior High offers a Newcomer Center, English as a Second Language program, summer remediation and "catch up" coursework.

Student Opportunities

The Willmar Senior High prides itself on world-class music and art programs, courses and extra-curricular options for students. Students may choose to perform in music programs including three bands, four choirs, two orchestras, mumerous small ensembles, and an annual major musical.
