Minnesota Commodity Peanut Butter B473 Not Included in Recall
The Minnesota Department of Education-Food and Nutrition Service (MDE-FNS) would like to assure that the commodity peanut butter (B473) is not included in the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) recall.
The three truckloads of commodity peanut butter (B473) for Minnesota’s School Year 2008-2009 are from the following suppliers: Algood Food Company out of Kentucky, Clements Food Company out of Oklahoma, and Sunland, Inc., out of New Mexico. MDE-FNS received letters of reassurance from each supplier stating that PCA does not produce their products and, therefore, their products are not included in the commercial recall of PCA peanut butter.
If there are lingering questions regarding non-commodity peanut butter products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that they have added a searchable database on the Website (www.fda.gov) where you can enter a product name and learn whether it is involved in a recall tied to the Salmonella investigation.
For further assistance with commodity information, please contact the Food Distribution Team at 651-582-8526 or by e-mail fns.fdp@state.mn.us.
Following are letter excerpts:
Nicolas B. Melhuish, President of Algood Food Company:
“WE WANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT ALL PEANUT BUTTER AND PEANUT PASTE SOLD BY ALGOOD FOOD COMPANY IS PRODUCED IN OUR LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY FACILITY. NO PRODUCT PRODUCED BY ALGOOD FOOD COMPANY IS THE SUBJECT OF THE FDA INVESTIGATION OF PEANUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA.
In conclusion, we would stress that all peanut butter and peanut paste produced by Algood, including that product sold to our industrial users as well as that packed and sold for retail sale, is wholesome and free of any food safety risk.”
Edward B. Clements, President of Clements Foods Company:
“By way of this letter, we would like to clarify that the “King Nut” and “Parnell’s Pride” peanut butter being recalled throughout the country was not produced by Clements Foods Company. No peanut butter manufactured by Clements Foods Company is impacted by the recent news stories.”
In the meantime, please rest assured, again, that no product manufactured by Clements Foods Company is impacted by this recall.”
Jimmie Shearer, President and CEO of Sunland, Inc.:
“First, we want to unequivocally assure you, that Sunland, Inc., is not involved in the supply chain or the manufacturing of the peanut butter distributed by King Nut or Peanut Corp.
Whereas we are not involved, we appreciate and understand your concerns about the most recent salmonella outbreak, which may be linked to certain peanut butter products. We hope to alleviate those concerns and insure your peace of mind in connection with Sunland products.”
