English Language Learners
The purpose of the English Language Learners (ELL) Program in Willmar is to provide students who speak another language with the English skills necessary to succeed in all areas of school and out in the real world. The goal of the ELL program is to enable the students to take full advantage of their education by achieving academic language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The Federal office of Civil Rights, the State of Minnesota, and the Willmar School District have specific requirements for entrance into the program based on the results of English competency testing.
English as a Second Language (ELL) services vary according to the needs of students. Some students participate in ELL once a week while others receive up to several hours daily. Students are served within the ELL classroom or in the mainstream classroom.
When a student demonstrates proficiency in English through success in language assessments and in academic areas, he or she will be exited from the ESL program. After exiting the program, the student's progress will be evaluated to ensure continued success.
What we can do for your child:
Teachers providing ELL services are licensed by the State of Minnesota to teach English Language Learners. Paraprofessionals also assist students within the ELL and mainstream classrooms.
- Services are provided to all eligible students in kindergarten through grade twelve.
- Small groupings in the ELL setting provide greater opportunities to participate and to develop oral and written language more rapidly.
- Instruction is provided to meet the individual needs of each student.
- Subject area vocabulary and concepts are developed and reinforced.
- Students experience success and feel pride in their accomplishments.
- Students develop learning strategies which enable them to become independent learners.
- ELL instruction builds on the skills necessary to pass the Graduation Standards Basic Requirement Tests.
What you can do for your child
Children that are able to listen, speak, read and write in their home language will learn English more easily. Talk to your children, read and tell them stories, and teach them to express their thoughts and feelings in your home language.
Individuals can be successful in more than one language and cultural setting. Showing pride in the home language and culture will help your child.
Encourage your child to participate in extra school activities. Sports, music, and school clubs are good ways for your child to practice English.
Become involved in your child's school. Research shows that parental involvement increases a child's chance for success.
Did you know?
Second language speakers develop English proficiency at varying rates. A non-English speaker, with a solid base in his or her first language, will need between one to three years to learn enough English to communicate with others about everyday things. A student will need five to ten years to develop the language he or she needs to be successful in academic subjects such as science and social studies.
English as a Second Language (ELL) and General Education Diploma (GED) classes are also available for adults. Classes are offered both day and evening. For more information, please call 320/235-9444.
