Earning Credits

EARNING CREDITS

DAILY:

Each day students attend class they have an opportunity to earn one or more units of credit.  This is determined by the student's performance, use of time, and desire to graduate.  Units accumulate faster when students attend regularly and stay on task.  Skipping class or wasting class time delays the process of earning units.

Students earning quarter credits must earn 30 units of daily credit.   Students earning trimester credits must earn 40 units of daily credit while students on a semester/term plan need to earn 60 daily units.  Full year credits equal 120 units.

Students in the daily program who do not earn a minimum of three units in a class during the week are at risk of being dropped from that class.

INDEPENDENT STUDY:

Independent study offers two tracks.  The first tract is for students no longer enrolled in another high school.  These students must be 16 years of age or older or must have been expelled from another school to participate in this type of program.  Classes are available in the evening.

The second tract is for students who are enrolled in another high school during the day and need to complete additional credits at the ALC.  These students have no age restriction if their home high school is a 9th through 12th grade program.  If the home high school is based on grades 10 through 12 then the student attending the independent study program must be 16 years of age or older.  These dual attendance students are limited to classes offered during the evening hours.

Independent study classes are offered during evening hours.  Students will be scheduled to meet with each of their teachers for a ninety minute appointment each week that school is in session.  A minimum of five hours of homework in each class will need to be completed each week in order for students to remain in the program.   A failure to attend classes regularly and complete the minimum amount of class work will result in a student being dropped from the program.  The only excuses that will reserve a student's appointment are 1.) illness with a doctor's written excuse or 2.) a death in the immediate family.
