Curriculum
Social Studies Class
Students study and analyze U.S. History, Economics, Geography, and American Government. We utilize books, computers, periodicals, Video, and TV to explore topics and create presentations. Minnesota Standards for these subject areas are embedded into the curriculum. Students demonstrate understanding through assessment, discussions and presentations.
Visual Art Class
Visual Art addresses the 4 newly drafted Minnesota State Visual Arts Standards (Artistic Foundations, Create/Make, Perform/Present, and Respond/Critique) and their benchmarks through a variety of hands-on projects. Students explore various mediums by identifying and solving problems through the design and creation of original artwork. The textbook, Arttalk, guides students through the Elements of Art, the Principles of Design and the interpretation of artwork produced by students, peers, old masters, and contemporary artists. Thinking skills, planning, artistic process and self-reflection are all part of student achievement.
Science Class
Students study and analyze curriculum in the areas of Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science. Students demonstrate understanding through conducting experiments, classroom discussions, writing reports and illustrating information.
Communications Class & Language Arts Class
Students apply a variety of strategies to expand their vocabulary. They work on comprehension strategies in order to understand, respond to, analyze, interpret, evaluate and appreciate a variety of fiction, poetic and nonfiction text. Students are instructed to write in narrative, expository, descriptive, persuasive and critical modes with attention to audience, focus, quality of ideas and purpose while applying the standard English conventions when writing.
Mathematics Class
Students are informally tested to determine their strengths and weaknesses in math. From these tests an individual math program is devised to fit student needs. Students are then tested again before leaving to check for progress.
In addition students participate in recreation and True Thought Corrective Thinking group/journal activities daily.
